History - a stone’s throw from the tarmac!
Travel February 9th. 2009, 5:41amWhy wait till you’ve dropped off your suitcases and settled into your hotel to go off sightseeing when there’s something really special on the doorstep of Durham Tees Airport? Corbridge is a roman garrison town and is situated thirty five miles from the airport landing strip.
When in Durham, you are perfectly situated to drive your hire car (or walk even) the 73 miles of Hadrian’s Wall. Originally built in 122AD by the Romans, the intention was to keep the Scottish Picts from interfering with the Britons.
Arriving in Durham presents the perfect opportunity to explore the traditional mining towns of the north east, once thriving communities collecting coal necessary for England’s once booming manufacturing industries. This was where the first passenger railway in the world started out thanks to the coal that was locally sourced.
Ever since 1834, the highlight of the city’s activities is that of the Durham Regatta - staged every year since. Don’t miss out on this huge celebration of the region’s bygone years especially as it is the second oldest of its kind in England.
