English saddles spawn the side saddle
Sports June 1st. 2008, 1:10pmThe side saddle is a form of English Saddles originally designed to conform to early social ideas about women, skirts, and riding astride a horse.
The side saddle has not one, but two pommel horns to sue for balance and is quite stable even while jumping a horse. When using a sidesaddle, the rider sits with both legs on one side of the horse rather than one leg on each side. Though the person still faces forward, both legs on one side means practice is needed to maintain balance.
While once considered the norm in riding during the 14th through 19th centuries, it is now somewhat an art form and is mainly used at parades or vintage shows.
