When I started learning about modern furniture what was startling to me was how old the designs were. Some of the most iconic modern chairs are designs that have been around for fifty or sixty years. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman for example was designed in 1956. The Barcelona Chair and Ottoman in 1929. Warren Platner’s well know metal wire table and armchairs were designed in the 1960’s. What makes these chairs iconic is the fact that they are timeless examples of modern furniture style and function. I own an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. They’re without a doubt my favorite and most comfortable pieces of furniture.
