When you’re detoxing, here’s some nutrition supplements you should think about taking to help support your detoxing organs and help you get the most from your detox. You’ll get a good detox from all of the supplements but if you’re interested in a broader cleanse there are many other herbal remedies you can include in your regime. If you want to do that it’s always a good idea to take it up with a qualified health therapist. You may also like to try some detox foot patches to help you detox while you sleep. Foods you can eat on a healthy detox diet

Vegetables and Fruits

Feel free to have any fruits and vegetables, just make sure you eat a varied selection of them each day. Doing so will make sure you get a wider spectrum of each of the crucial phytochemicals (beneficial plant elements).

You should eat at least 3 pieces of fruit a day. Mix colors - yellow, orange, red - which will help you get a broad range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Have fruit for desserts, as healthy snacks or mixed up and juiced or in smoothies. You can also have dried fruit, but not too much.

The same again with vegetables - aim for three servings a day. All varieties of vegetables are good for detoxifying. Make at least one of these a cruciferous vegetable (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, watercress or cauliflower) as these contain glucosinolates, which help support the liver’s detoxing powers, which means you get a powerful liver detox as well.

Vegetables are best eaten raw in salads but if do cook them just lightly steamed so that the enzymes and nutrients are preserved as much as possible. You can also use them for juicing because you can make a great tasting detox drink.

Grains, bread and pasta

Eliminate wheat as much as possible and replace it with wholegrain foods. Brown rice, buckwheat, soy beans, organic wholegrain of wheat free bread, rye bread or crackers, wholemeal bread, wheat-free and whole grain pasta and oatcakes are all desirable.

There’s a lot less gluten in oats than in wheat and are allowed but you may want to steer clear of them if you have problems with bloating or you’re allergic to gluten in anyway.

You get a lot of fiber from wholegrains, as well as vitamins like the B vits and vitamin E, minerals (such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and selenium), complex carbs (the good stuff) and some essential oils. All these fruits, veggies and whole grains, give us slow release carbohydrates, which provide more sustained energy. Aim to include one portion of grains, bread or pasta in each meal.

Pulses, Grains and Sprouted Beans

Pulses provide protein as well as B vitamins, iron, zinc and fiber. Ideally, buy dried pulses, soak and cook them as per the directions on the pack. It’s handy to have a tin of pulses as back up but make sure you drain them and wash them well if they have been tinned in salt water.

It’s good to use all types of lentils and bean sprouts on the detox diet. Sprouted beans are excellent on a detox diet. They contain lots of natural enzymes, vitamins, minerals and vegetable protein. Sprouted beans are available from health food shops or most big supermarkets. Or if you prefer you could grow your own.
